The British Club, a group under Yahoo Groups, is for Brits still living in
the UK, British Ex-patriates living anywhere, and Anglophiles. We use the
term "British" to mean anyone from the British Isles. We also use the term
"Anglophile" in a catholic sense encompassing kinship to all of Great
Britain. Some of our members hail from England, some from Scotland.
Ex-patriates live in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere in the world.
Anglophiles trace their roots to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales,
often a combination.

We talk about British music, actors, theatre, television, food, sports,
Royalty, British history and other things British, as well as any other
subject that might move us (British or not). While we do not tolerate trolls
or flamers, our humour can be decidedly off kilter.

If you think you might enjoy The British Club, you are cordially invited to
join us. Just send an email to British_Club-***@yahoogroups.com. Try
us out for awhile, and see if itÂ’s a good fit.

Sincerely,

The British Club

Big,

You'd be very welcome. I'm one of the anglophiles. Have ancestors from
both Scotland and England ... probably some Irish and Welsh as well. All we
ask is that our members either have kinship to or an affinity for the UK.
As far as occupations, we have retirees, one novelist, a couple of other
writers, one man of the cloth (who claims he drools a lot because of his
lobotomy), a schoolteacher nee journalist, a human rights worker, a forest
ranger, etc. Not everyone is on at one time, but we try to keep it lively.

Hello there Barry, are you wandering around cyberspace looking for a
new home like myself?<g> This looks like a good bet don't you think?

To introduce myself to the ng I'm Lanky (in name only I might add),
born and bred in a part of NW England which the powers that be decided
should be moved to Merseyside. I'm 73 and too old to move, so I call
myself Lanky to show my spirit is still in Lancashire ;-)

I think I will have a lurk in the 'The British Club' as Barbara
suggests.

Well now! you meet the nicest people in the cyberworld...Hi Lanky, I
hope you are well.
For the benefit of anybody who is interested....I am a female of ample
proportions - 76 years old and somewhat mobility challenged. I have
not yet given up hope that somewhere out there is a newsgroup
dedicated to a little fun and a few chuckles. I was born in Mansfield
( a little mining town 15 miles from Nottingham) and came to
Australia, the land of bull and bunny in 1951. Each time we planned a
trip home I got pregnant so after three tries we gave up.

Hi Tim, I hope you'll find time to drop us a line or two before to fly
off again :-) How was the weather in Devon? The missus and me are
usually gallivanting around there at this time of the year, but we've
had to give it a miss this year.

Hi Lanky, Yes I'll certainly be dropping you a line before I fly off to
Florida. We went down to Dartmouth and drove to various places from there.
The weather was up and down - had some lovely sunny days, and then some
pretty wet ones. However, it didn't stop us hiking along the River Dart at
Dartmeet (Badger's Holt) in the absolute pouring rain.....proved to be one
of the highlights of our visit, such was the fun we had! :-) I didn't
mind the rain....I shall be getting plenty of sunshine from 5th October,
returning to our wintry shores around the 15th January (unless the kids get
me to stay longer!).

Yes, I shall be staying over Christmas and the New Year, returning around
the 15th January. That's the plan so far. I shall drop you an e-mail
before I go, which will have to be very soon now! Still got the garden to
'put to sleep' properly, disconnect batteries from cars, figure out which
setting to leave the heating on, re-direct my mail to Rosie, do some final

I'm trying to figure out which piece of Lancashire was moved to
Merseyside ...
I recall a hot dispute over some of it being gobbled up by
Yorkshire, or vice versa, this was some 30 years ago and my memory's
not up to it.
(it's the drink, see).
Take a look at http://www.lancashire-fhhs.org.uk/lancs/index.htm which
shows how much Lancashire has shrunk due to border changes of 1974 and
2002.
Didn't you live in Manchester at the time, or was that sum1else ;-)

While we do not tolerate
trolls or flamers, our humour can be decidedly off kilter.
If you think you might enjoy The British Club, you are cordially invited
Try us out for awhile, and see if it's a good fit.
Sincerely,
The British Club

Hi Barry, Is it really nine months since that little darling put in
an appearance? Make the most of it, they grow so quickly.
We have a hands on weekend with only Australian based grandson this
week. Four years of old age already.

Hello Bigbazza, I'm sorry we haven't exchanged messages before, I've

Hi Lanky, I am afraid I found the British Club enjoyable but too
prolific....so I had to unsubscribe. A pity but that is the way the
cookie crumbles. If I decide to go broadband (still making up my
mind) I will certainly go back....Meanwhile catch up with me here now
and again....

I have a job keeping up with the number of messages. However, I have
broadband so will continue to lurk there for a while and post when I
can.
This newsgroup was shown by the Berlin server to be a new one, but by
the looks of it, doing a Google search, it seems to have been going
for some time.

Hi Jingles - Unfortunately, I, too, found the British Club to be too busy
for me.....especially at the moment when I haven't really got the time to
post much. I shall reassess the situation when I return from this trip to
Florida and settle down again. Naturally, I shall keep in touch with you
and Don cos my sanity depends on it!

Come on...June...Don't 'give up'!.....Most posts have been 'directed' to me
!...<g>...

They have been 'suggesting' a group to be 'established' where we can also
post pictures to....and some have 'suggested' that it could be a group that
was closed to 'spammers' getting in !...There (fortunately) has not been
anything like that happened yet...Most of us know when 'Not' to respond to
them !....

I have given a couple of day's break from posting, as I have been busy most
of the week...My Aunt is still 'dying' in at RPAH....I had so many 'calls'
from the Specialists who are dealing with her yesterday...Many decisions to
be made !...Also Wed and Thurs...2 full day's delivering my papers..My Son,
Timothy cannot help me now as he has started (at last) on his career path !

By the way...June...You mentioned about not having 'Broadband' .....I
changed over to 'Broadband' from Dial-Up with 'Optusnet'..I am actually
'SAVING' money now...not costing more at all.....I have 'Foxtel' Cable here
in my house..I have had it on ever since they started.....So I now have
'Cable Broadband'......I was 'renting' another 'Premium' line from
Telstra...and cost for that extra line went up to a little over $30 a month
!.....Also I was paying $29.95 a month for Optusnet Dial-Up......I was also
paying for everytime I dialled up to be 'connected' to the 'Internet'...and
sometimes it would 'drop out' ! then I would have to Dial-Up again..more
cost !....Also...I was 'growing whiskers' waiting for the internet to
'download' !.....So Now....I pay $59.95 a Month to have Cable
'Broadband'....Uncapped download speed...I have max download of 1500....I
have the Up-Load speed 'capped' to 128...It is now like 'Greased Lightning'
!!....If cable is not available to you...ADSL probably would also be
available for you at the same cost.....That is where you access the internet
through you phone...Not Dial-Up...you are permanently 'connected' to the

The plans are unlimited...up to 10 Gigabytes a month...and then you 'may' be

you ever get on any Dial-Up !)....I will attach the 2 URL's for the Telstra

You certainly are a busy man....a wonder you have time for the
cyberworld. <grin>
I too have seen how we can save money by having broadband and have
placed the matter in the hands of youngest son. He will do the whole
thing for me. But I have to await his availability.
Both Derrick and I have our own computers and our own ISPs there is
also the matter of a dedicated line for my computer - so the savings
are obvious. Now all we have to do is wait.....
As for alt. friends, well.....although I directed my posts to you, I
was obvious, and it would have been nice to be noticed....I did post
to a couple of other people but got short changed.....I am beginning
to think they suspected that I was a troll....<grin>

You know Lanky....we dreamed of a newsgroup where it was just fun and

So you found us Barry? welcome to our little cosy corner of the
cyberlounge. Incidentally in spite of my efforts in alt.friends,
nobody seems to have noticed me, so I have given up....

!!....If cable is not available to you...ADSL probably would also be
available for you at the same cost.....That is where you access the internet
through you phone...Not Dial-Up...you are permanently 'connected' to the
web...and you can still use your phone and receive calls at the same time...
The plans are unlimited...up to 10 Gigabytes a month...and then you 'may' be

Hi Lanky, I am afraid I found the British Club enjoyable but too
prolific....so I had to unsubscribe. A pity but that is the way the
cookie crumbles. If I decide to go broadband (still making up my
mind) I will certainly go back....Meanwhile catch up with me here now
and again....

Tim
Jingles and I are still discussing whether we were wise to let you go
on this trip after all. Just make sure you come back.<g>
Don.
I really do have reservations Lanky....
(Seems we have a newsgroup all to ourselves......wanna wrestle?
<grin>)

Really...Jingles...Not 'pulling' the blinds down...Hmm..Well, I am 'spying'
on you !..<g>....Just you 'Behave' yourselves in here !!
I can 'see' what's going on !!...

If you think you might enjoy The British Club, you are cordially invited to
us out for awhile, and see if it's a good fit.
Sincerely,
The British Club
Hi there! Just had an e-mail from a friend who recommended looking in on
you. Looks good from where I'm sitting (in a decent swivel chair in Kent,
England). I qualify hands down, bloodwise. I was born in London, England
69 years ago - the fourth of five. Spent 11 years in California from 1967,
where my two kids were born, then came back to England.....Devon first, then
Oxford, now Kent. I might just have time to drop my bags at the group,
before picking them up again and beaming off to Florida for three months to
visit my son and daughter - the 'kids' as I call them. Well, one of them
qualifies for that title, sometimes sporting a goatee (must tell her it
doesn't look so good!). So, what next? ah yes, the email...
